Memorial Day will someday mean a double mourning, a mourning for the violent deaths suffered by of millions of American military and a much more agonizing mourning for the deaths, maiming, destruction and suffering these Americans in uniform brought to millions of innocent men, women and children by committing crimes against humanity in their own beloved countries for the lies of their government and media.

One hundred and thirty years ago, after visiting wonderland, Alicia went in a mirror to discover the world in reverse. If Alicia were to be reborn in our days [and in Venezuela], she would not need to go through any mirrors; it would enough to look out the window. Eduardo Galeano

Bill Gates, with $75 billion owns at least twice as much wealth as the poorest 1/10th of humanity – 750 million fellow human beings suffering hunger throughout the year and watching millions of their children die of starvation. If Bill gave the UN the $30 billion it needs to end hunger everywhere for one year, he would drop to fourth richest person in the world. Trump could have the 540 US billionaires raise that $30 billion.

On 22 February, a court in Thailand will issue its verdict in a trial regarding the attempted murder of human rights defender Supoj Kalasong who was fighting for land rights for the Klong Sai Pattana farming community.
President Trump calls mainstream reporters and commentators 80% liars. The blood-soaked war-promoting CIA fed monopolized mainstream media that has accused Trump supporters and allies of ‘fake news’ has backfired. There is historical substantial evidence of the US media justifying genocide. Ramsey Clark expects the eventual prosecution of media executives and media celebrities, and this is not a utopian ideal considering that five Nazi media celebrities were convicted a Nuremberg. Two hanged.
On the 20th January 2017, Africans, Latin Americans and non-Europeans all over the world witnessed a massive hypocrisy, a leader elected on a nationalist mandate to secure jobs for his own people, a right that has been denied non-European leaders for centuries under European colonialism.
The vast majority of London-based Bangladeshis speak Sylheti yet their language and standard Bengali are mutually unintelligible. Recently the written script, Sylheti Nagri has seen a revival in south Asia and in the UK, as a new generation question the disconnect between what they speak at home and how they communicate in public.
Having just returned (Monday, Jan. 16, 2016) from participating in a demonstration and march in Oakland, Ca. today in honor of the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr, I was glad to receive this submission to Tikkun (below) by African American studies professor (and Tikkun magazine author) Obery Hendricks. It is an important counter to the kind of rhetoric and tone I heard at today’s demonstration. At the rally before the march began I heard one of the M.C.s ask the crowd to repeat “we will win by ANY MEANS NECESSARY”–a slogan I first heard from the Black Panther Party in 1968–in clear attempt to repudiate King’s message both then and now about how to fight racism.
Rabbi Arik Ascherman, the co-founder of Haqel and a recipient of the Tikkun Award at our November conference, needs your help to stop Israel and the JNF (Jewish National Fund) from evicting Bedouins from their homes in order to build a completely Jewish city on the land where they have lived. He is asking all of us to contact your nearest Israeli Embassy or consulate to ask them to stop this outrageous action. Doing this has helped in the past, so it could make a difference again, and all he wants from you is a phone call or letter to the Embassy or Consulate asking them to stop that from happening. Editor’s note: Few Americans are informed about the degree of distortions in Israeli life and repression of Palestinian rights inevitably accompany the Occupation of the West Bank, that are the background for the U.N. Security Council resolution passed last week which made clear that Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal under international law. Here are a few headlines for one typical day (December 27, 2016) from the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz: “Israel Wrecks 18 Palestinian Structures for Every One It Licenses in West Bank’s Area C”; “Israel Education Minister Yair Lapid (ed note: from the ‘centrist’ Yesh Atid party) promotes bill that would ban anti-Occupation group from Israeli schools (ed note: group is called Break the Silence–a group of former Israeli soldiers who tell stories of what they had been ordered to do while enforcing the Occupation of the West Bank and the invasions of Gaza by the IDF); and an editorial entitled “Trump and Netanyahu: An Alliance of Bullies” (referencing in part Netanyahu’s threats to punish countries that voted for the U.N. resolution). Please read Tikkun magazine’s contributing editor Mark LeVine whose analysis (below) of why the U.N. vote last week has greater importance than the U.S. media has yet to acknowledge should be widely circulated–so please do so. –Rabbi Michael Lerner RabbiLerner.Tikkun@gmail.com
In Black Lamb and Grey Falcon (1941), the British author and journalist Rebecca West wrote:“It is sometimes very hard to tell the difference between history and the smell of a skunk.” 2017 could very well be the Year of the Skunk, with a lot more reek than is normal in store…
During the shopping season for gifts marking the birth of the Jesus the Son of God and teacher of ‘turn the other cheek’ and ‘love thy enemies,’ one half of the“financial element in the centers of power which has owned the government since the days of Andrew Jackson,”[FDR quote] seems to have thrown up a president-elect that has promised Americans and the world a spirit for 2017, more in keeping with the teaching of Jesus.
Haiti’s Presidential election, postponed from the scheduled date of Oct. 9th due to Hurricane Mathew, is now scheduled for November 20th, 2016. There can be no recovery unless there is a government in place that truly represents the people. The lack of such a government is why there was no recovery from the 2010 earthquake and why there must now be free and fair elections in which the people’s voice is heard. If hurricane relief is separated from that, recovery will fail.
But for media management, election 2016 would be a playing out in public of indecision within the ruling rich 1/10th of 1%, whether to switch to less profitable investing to build up USA, or continue wildly enriching themselves in wars & investing in higher profit rendering low wage 3rd world nations, at the same time helping these nations, led by China, to overtake the US & Europe in economic and political power sooner.
